Biomedical science staff at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust (NCUH) are celebrated Biomedical Science Day on Thursday 20 June at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
Biomedical Science Day is a national event organised by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), the professional body for biomedical scientists and laboratory support staff. The awareness day aims to inform the public and empower patients by telling them about practices in biomedical science, strengthen interdisciplinary team work and communication in hospitals and celebrate a profession that is at the heart of healthcare.
In its third year, Biomedical Science Day has gained significant popularity amongst biomedical laboratory staff across the UK.
Biomedical science is a biology and chemistry related discipline used mostly in healthcare laboratories to identify, research, monitor and treat diseases. As one of the broadest areas of modern science, it focuses on the complexity of the human body and underpins much of modern medicine.
The Pathology staff will be hosting a stand in the main atrium of the Cumberland Infirmary to show staff, patients and visitors how their work is vital to patients and the journey samples take to enable doctors to make effective diagnosis.
Jessica Dixon, Pathology Quality Manager at NCUH, said: “Biomedical Science Day is a great opportunity for us to build relationships with our colleagues, patients and public. By highlighting the role of the laboratory we can help everybody understand the vital role of biomedical science in healthcare.
“We’re often a forgotten part of healthcare as we spend the vast majority of our time in the lab but the tests we carry out are a key part of diagnosing and treating patients.”
Alison Geddis, President of the Institute of Biomedical Science, said: “Despite many encounters with our work throughout their lifetime, most people are unaware of the important role of biomedical science in diagnosis, treatment and general healthcare. The aim of Biomedical Science Day is to inform the public about the full range of expertise involved in hospital care, and to celebrate our great profession.
