Clinical Governance

Clinical Governance is about the quality and safety of patient care. The Department of Health defines clinical governance as: “A framework through which NHS organisations are accountable for continually improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish.” (Department of Health, 1998).

Care Quality Commission Annual Health Check

The Care Quality Commission assesses and rates the performance of each NHS Trust in England. They look at a wide range of areas, from the overall quality of care (including safety of patients, cleanliness and waiting times) to how well trusts manage their finances. Our latest Annual Health Check results can be found on the Care Quality Commission website.

Clinical audit

Clinical effectiveness means identifying and using best practice. This is the care and treatments that work best and there are national guidelines for care based on this. Comparing what is happening against best practice (what should be happening) is the clinical audit process.
