Our volunteers perform many tasks, from proof reading leaflets to chatting to patients. You can read more about the different kinds of volunteers below.

You’ll find our Meet and Greet volunteers at the old entrance to West Cumberland Hospital. They do things like:
- give advice and directions to visitors
- escort patients and visitors to wards and departments
- locate wheelchairs
- chat to patients
You’ll find our Community Hospital volunteers on our wards. They visit patients and assist our ward staff by:
- serving food
- answering the phone
- doing admin tasks
- helping patients to walk around
- helping patients to brush their hair
- reading to patients
- chatting to patients
- sitting with confused or end of life patients
Our Oncology volunteers work on the cancer wards. They visit patients who are receiving treatments like chemotherapy. They do things like:
- chat to patients
- make them cups of tea
Our Macmillan volunteers work at the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre at Cumberland Infirmary. They do things like:
- create information packs
- speak one to one with patients
- take part in Look Good Feel Better events
Our Speech After Stoke volunteers work with adult patients in the community. They assist our Speech and Language Therapists in group sessions and on a one to one basis by:
- supporting patients with communication difficulties
- taking part in activities with patients like playing board games
You can find our Breastfeeding Peer Supporters at breastfeeding groups around the county. Usually they are mums who receive special training and help our Health Visitors and Midwives by:
- listening to and supporting other mums
- helping mums to talk through their options
- giving out information and resources about breastfeeding
You can find our chaplaincy volunteers on the wards. They do things like:
- visit patients, relatives and staff and listen to their stories
- offer spiritual support to people of any religion or belief
- refer patients to the Chaplain
All our hospital radio staff are volunteers. They do things like:
- present hospital radio shows
- keep records and library systems up to date

Our Patient Panel consists of current and past patients. They help us to improve our services by:
- chatting to patients to gather feedback on their experience
- being part of committees and task groups to give their perspective
- helping to audit hospital facilities and services
