Always welcoming and caring, with a lovely smile, Olive volunteered many hours of her time each week.

In the Oncology department, Olive worked as part of a group of volunteers who made refreshments for people while they were waiting for treatment. She offered a listening ear to anyone who wanted to talk or pass the time of day.

Her fellow volunteer and friend Clare, remembers a time when Olive was called out during the night. Olive was asked to baptise a baby who was not expected to live. Olive came to the hospital, baptised the baby and spent time with the family.

Years later, Olive was in the main atrium of the hospital when a lady ran up to her, tapped her on the shoulder and said “do you recognise us?” The lady went on introduce her child, the baby Olive had baptised years earlier. Olive had made such an impression on the family at a traumatic time in their life, that they had remembered her and had wanted to thank her.

Olive retired from her volunteering role in 2017. She was given a Community Heroes award for the time and support she dedicated to patients, visitors, staff and fellow volunteers.
