How we fit into the NHS structure
The Trust provides community services, mental health services, specialist services and services for children and families. We employ approximately 4,000 staff and serve a population of nearly 500,000 people across the Cumbria.

We work with a range of agencies to provide high quality care to the people of Cumbria which includes GPs, Cumbria County Council, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group and various other public sector and voluntary organisations.
Being a Foundation Trust
The Trust was authorised as a Foundation Trust by Monitor, the regulating body for health services in England, on the 1st October 2007. The terms of authorisation can be found on the Monitor website.
As a Foundation Trust we are still part of the NHS but have more freedom to decide how we deliver services locally. We’re also accountable to the local community through our members and governors. Members and governors can be our own staff, people who use our services, their families and carers or members of the public.
Organisational structure
As a Foundation Trust, the Board of Directors are not required to meet in public. However, our Board of Directors meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend them.
The Board of Directors work closely with our Governor’s Council, whose meetings are open to members only.
