Call me Paul or Mr Counter

Cumberland Infirmary

ENT

  • head and neck cancer
  • thyroid cancer
  • the use of the arts in healthcare

I trained in Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and then joined the Royal Navy, serving for 21 years. During this time I specialised in ENT surgery, receiving my training in Newcastle, Carlisle, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

I then worked in Exeter for several years before leaving the Royal Navy and coming to work in Cumbria in 2013.

The sheer variety of different patients and conditions that I see within ENT and the supportive nature of the team that I work with every day.

The strong links that I have with other healthcare professionals beyond just my ENT colleagues are also very valuable to me.

Being able to work in a county so packed with beautiful mountains, coastline and rivers is also very important.

All of these values (kindness, respect, ambition and collaboration) are important, but for successful collaboration to happen the other 3 are naturally included as well.
