Call me Mr Sellar

West Cumberland Hospital

Ophthalmology

  • glaucoma
  • general ophthalmology
  • learning disabilities

I studied at the University of Nottingham from 1975 obtaining a Bachelor of Medical Sciences in 1988 and Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery in 1980.

I carried out house jobs in Mansfield, taught anatomy at the University of Nottingham, and performed Senior House Officer jobs in Neurosurgery in Derby and Neurology in Norwich before training in Ophthalmology at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

From 1989 to 1996 I worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in the Maasziekenhuis, Boxmeer, in the Netherlands. In 1996 I returned to the UK as a consultant at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.

In 2018, I was President of the North of England Ophthalmological Society, representing over 500 ophthalmologists who meet for professional teaching 3 times a year and work in the north of England and Wales.

I enjoy providing a clear diagnosis from a confused or unclear clinical history which often requires careful listening to and questioning of a patient.

Providing continuity of care and support for patients with multiple chronic eye conditions such as glaucoma and macular disease.

Being able to improve vision for patients with small incision cataract surgery.

Providing ophthalmic care for children and adults who have learning disabilities that other people may have found difficult to help.

Teaching students and GPs and working with organisations that support those with visual impairment such as West Cumbria Society for the Blind who work locally and the charity CBM UK who work to relieve sight loss in the poorest countries of the world.

Not to mention working with such a caring and supportive team of nurses in the Eye Department at West Cumberland Hospital and across the Trust.

Kindness. Visiting hospital for a consultation or a medical or surgical procedure in often a unique and anxious time for most children and adults.

A little kindness and respect shown by medical, nursing and ancillary staff goes a long way towards relieving that stress and making that healthcare experience less traumatic.
