Cumberland Infirmary and Eden Valley Hospice
Palliative medicine
- management of difficult symptoms
- communication skills, particularly do not resuscitate (DNACPR) conversations
- teaching
I've been fortunate to have had a varied career as a GP, then working in oncology and haematology in Carlisle, before undergoing training in Palliative Medicine in Newcastle.
This experience helps me understand the challenges patients and families face when ill at home, in a care home, in hospital or in a hospice.
I spend about half my time working at Eden Valley Hospice where I am Medical Director, and the rest of my time supporting patients at Cumberland Infirmary and/or in their own home.
I enjoy my work and feel privileged to care for patients and carers at this difficult time in their life.
I work as part of a skilled multidisciplinary team and through my base at the hospice I'm able to offer support to a wide number of people wherever they may be.
The variety my work brings. From having time to listen to people, understand what's important to them, and easing their distress, to supporting colleagues with ethical dilemmas and teaching.
Collaboration. All the values are important but I can only help patients and carers if I work in partnership with them, and with professional colleagues. Palliative means 'cloak'. I can not wrap the cloak of care around someone without knowing who can help me keep it there.
