I qualified from the University of Manchester in 2007. I completed foundation training at Royal Preston Hospital rotating through trauma and orthopaedics, gastroenterology, general surgery, GP and the intensivce care unit (ICU).
I moved to the North East for emergency medicine training in 2009. For my core surgical training CT1 year I was based in the emergency department at Newcastle General Hospital for 8 months followed by a 4 month placement on the respiratory and cystic fibrosis unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI).
For my CT2 year I was based at Gateshead rotating between intensive care and anaesthetics. I moved to Cumbria for my CT3 year and was based in the emergency department at the Cumberland Infirmary.
I enjoyed the place so much that I stayed for my ST4 year and finally settled in the area. I moved back to the North East for my ST5 year based from the Major Trauma Centre at the RVI. I then commenced subspecialist training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
This was a year long programme based in Sunderland, however due to a knee injury, I ended up having a 6 month career hiatus.
I returned to Cumberland Infirmary for a 4 month placement after successful knee surgery. I then returned to Sunderland to complete Paediatric Emergency Medicince (PEM) training.
I was based at Sunderland Royal Paediatric emergency department for 6 months, then moved to the psychiatric intensive care units (PICU) at the Great North Children's Hospital for 3 months, followed by 3 months of paediatric medicine in Gateshead.
For my final year of training I returned to the adult emergency department at Sunderland Royal. I completed all the requirements for Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and completed training in June 2017.
I took up a post as a Consultant in the Emergency Department at the Cumberland Infirmary in October 2017.
The varied caseload that we have to manage here in the emergency department. Also the teamwork and camaraderie amongst the staff in the department and wider hospital.
Respect. We should treat all patients, relatives and colleagues with respect.
