I qualified in 1999 having graduated from the University of Aberdeen. I completed postgraduate training and research in Cardiology in the north of Scotland, before undertaking a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology in 2010 at the Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
I returned to the UK to take up my post as Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Trust in 2011 and was involved in establishing the percutaneous coronary intervention (angioplasty and stenting) service with colleagues at Cumberland Infirmary.
I'm a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and since 2014 have held the role of College Tutor at the Trust. I have a particular interest in medical education and training and have been nominated and selected as a finalist in the British Junior Cardiologist's Association Trainer of the Year Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
I'm an Educational and Clinical Supervisor for higher medical trainees and have also mentored nurses and pharmacists undertaking postgraduate diplomas.
Beyond my major interest in interventional cardiology, I also undertake pacemaker implantation and I'm currently the Lead Clinician for the bradycardia pacing service at the Trust.
I really enjoy seeing trainees develop during their time with us, and the variety associated with practising cardiology in a district general hospital setting.
Ambition. I think there's so much scope for us to develop the facilities in Carlisle to provide a truly state-of-the-art interventional cardiac centre comparable to others in the region to improve our patients' experience.
