Palliative medicine

I'm Medical Advisor for Hospice at Home West Cumbria and I chair the North Cumbria Palliative Medicines Management Group.

I qualified from Nottingham University, with a Bachelor of Medical Sciences in 1991 and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1993.

I trained as a GP in west Cumbria, gaining the Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1998.

I worked as a GP and also in palliative care and oncology until 2002 when I switched to working in specialist palliative care, initially as a staff grade and then associate specialist.

I gained the Cardiff Diploma in Palliative Medicine in 2005 and decided to pursue the equivalent route of specialist registration. I obtained the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Certificate in Palliative Medicine in 2012 and Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) Palliative Medicine in 2014.

I have worked as a consultant since 2013, initially as a locum consultant, until substantive appointment in 2014.

I've been a medical appraiser since 2012 and became Trust lead for medical appraisal in 2016.

I've been Clinical Director for Specialist Palliative Care Service in North Cumbria since 2017.

The opportunity to make a difference and work as part of a fantastic team.

We're often involved at a difficult time for patients and their families, this is a huge privilege to be part of.

The role also involves education, governance and strategic work across the healthcare system.

Kindness. I feel all of the trust values are important but I've chosen kindness as it is always remembered and valued.
